The re-invention of their artworks as 3D moulded collages they called MOULAGE .

With a vision of paintings that literally break free of the canvas and literally breaking out of the box both three dimensionally and beyond the frame - Blady + Van Mil re-invented their art as moulage through experimentation in the early days of the pandemic. It began as their way of holding onto positivity as the enormity of the crisis was revealed. Collage captured the idea that many small actions add up to new hope. Moulding the canvas – allowing it to rise and flow – gave new momentum to that feeling.

Also propelling this new technique was the artists’ desire to reinvent the ingrained preciousness embedded in the fine art world. To create each moulage, they purposely cut up many of their own prized works into small pieces.

Both professional artists married for 40 years - now collaborators in art as well as life for this project - Blady + Van Mil here started with a big idea and played together to see where it might go, accepting both success and failure as drivers of progress. This is the first time they collaborated on an entire collection. The success of this project has inspired them both to experiment with this style further whenever other comitments allow.

“In this time of turmoil and division, we realized we couldn’t change other people’s mindset, just our own. We began by dismantling our past works – with scissors – and were set free to experience art further from this surprisingly playful point of view.”
